Description

This adjustable tension-rod kit is designed for the early clevis style models, typically for 1984-87 chassis, although some later built 1987 models may require the “late” variant. Overall length adjustment is approximately 25mm longer or shorter than the OEM rod, for increased caster, or just to work correctly when using lengthened control arms. The caster effect can be important for high-speed driving, where the car will have more tendency to stay driving straight, and slightly more difficult to turn, but the 300ZX is primarily a touring car.

When installing the rods for adjustment initially, it is recommended to only install the farthest M10 bolts to initially fit to the control arm, once a baseline alignment is achieved, install the second M10 bolt at the head. The point of this is to allow the tension rod angle to properly adjust to the final seated position before torquing. In rare cases where the bolt hole doesn’t line up well enough to allow the bolt to go through the control arm, a simple round file or drill should make short work of any interference.

Also it’s worth pointing out, that since the clevis is only accessible from the sides when out of the bracket, the 5/8″ throughbolt and nut should be tightened before assembly. The clevis should be installed so that the rodend is oriented vertically, and just like the OEM rod, the head should be kinked towards the ground. For a starting point, assemble the rodend with associated jamnut, as well as the tension-rod head with its own, threaded all the way in, before winding them into the turnbuckles at least 20mm. If this is still significantly longer than necessary, wind the head into the tension rod additional turns, making sure to duplicate those turns on the other tension-rod before installation.
